Heroes for my Son by Brad Meltzer
I continue to “work and rework” on a book about H.O.P.E that is all about people that have kept HOPE alive in their lives and continue to strive for excellence, whether that is a personal or professional goal. This book turned out to be a great role model for the style of book that I will be putting together. Brad’s goal with this book was to give guidance to his son and it turned out to be not only a great book for his son/family, but it’s great for anyone. It is inspiring and humbling to learn about many of the leaders that have come before us and their struggles that they overcame to achieve what they set out to do, regardless of circumstances or the challenges. I believe all of us could use great role models to follow and this book is full of them.
I was able to take something away from every person that was displayed in this book, yet here are the 3 main lessons that I have taken away:
1. The ability to stay focused on an objective. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for over 27 years…..27 years!….and yet he stayed true and focused on liberating his people. Regardless of his circumstances or how unjust the country/government was in the treatment of him and others, they stayed together in their plan and over time their resiliency created a legacy that the world will forever honor and remember.
2. The humility and commitment to serve the world is very inspiring. Dan West a farmer in the Midwest (Indiana) decided one day to help starving children in other countries by sending them one of his resources – cows, and that ultimately led to the creation of Heifer International that has fed over 8.5 million people in 125 countries. You never know how one idea can create such a wonderful legacy.
3. Doing something that inspires you will more often than not inspire many others in the same way. Team Hoyt is a father/son combo that has raced in over 234 triathlons, 67 marathons, and 6 ironmans – WOW! This may not seem like such a feat until you learn that the son has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheel chair and dad pushes him from start to finish! In all of their efforts they continue to inspire others that anything is possible and that we are only limited by our own expectations.
This book is an easy read and is full of inspiration from people of all walks of life. I highly recommend that you add this to your Success Library so you can review it often and inspire you to follow in the footsteps of many of these tremendous human beings that have helped the world be a better place because they have lived.
